I have been hired to design a new substance abuse facility. This will be an outpatient facility called Imperium Wellness Clinic located in Gatlinburg, TN. Alcohol abuse and addiction will be the primary focus of this clinic. The client wants to create an inclusive and pleasant environment for every user to enjoy. Natural lighting will be important in this space and will be achieved through daylight and window placement. Artificial lighting within this space should be flexible to adhere to different situations. Some examples of this would include dimmers, motion sensors, and following IES recommendations. Other goals for this project include sustainability, flexibility, and visual comfort. Acoustic privacy is also a goal for this project. Sustainability will be addressed through different means such as material selections, while flexibility will be found throughout in ways such as moveable partitions and walls. The use of biophilic design will be incorporated to enhance users’ experience and promote health and comfort.
The staff are just as important as those using the facility, thus enhancing the goal of flexibility throughout the clinic. This will be achieved through the use of flexible furniture for the users and staff. Overall, the clinic should feel serene, spacious, and inviting to everybody. Natural and sustainable material should be used wherever possible, which will reinforce the environment the clients want to create. Overall, this space will be accessible and healing to those suffering with alcohol abuse and addiction.
